Hi, I’m Sarah and I blog over at Just Buttons Blog (www.justbuttonsblog.co.uk). I write about living life as a first time mummy and what my family gets up to. I currently live in Suffolk with my son and husband, but we’re originally from Essex.
Why I chose to write about Cambridge…
My husband went to university in Cambridge so I’ve been visiting the city since about 2010. I absolutely loved visiting him at university as Cambridge is such a beautiful area. I’ve had some wonderful memories happen in the city, including my husband (back then best friend) ask me to be his girlfriend!
5 things to see and do in Cambridge
University Colleges
My favourite thing to do would be walking around the University Colleges. They’re absolutely beautiful! Most of the colleges are open to the public in certain times of the year so there’s lots to visit (31 colleges in total!). The University of Cambridge is one of the most famous universities in the world so it’s definitely worth having a look round!
Fitzwilliam Museum
If you want to visit a museum I’d highly recommend the Fitzwilliam museum. It’s free entry and they own a huge collection of amazing works including; Arts of Asia, Literacy Manuscripts, Armour and so much more.
Punting on the River Cam
One of the most quintessential things to do in Cambridge is punting down the river Cam. Doing this gives you the opportunity to see Cambridge in a different light. The scenery is beautiful and it’s incredibly relaxing. It’s a bit pricey but it’s worth doing!
The Eagle
The Eagle, a famous pub in Cambridge city centre, is where Watson and Crick announced that they had discovered ‘the secret of life’, ie. the double helix structure of DNA. There are 2 plaques to commemorate the discovery, one on the outside of the building and one inside by the table they used to lunch at. Even though it’s not a big attraction it’s worth a visit, even if it’s just for a drink!
Shopping
If you’re after a bit of retail therapy, Cambridge has plenty of it! There are 2 big shopping centres as well as shops dotted around the city centre. One of our favourite places to stop by is the Cambridge Market on Market Square. There are lots of types of stalls to buy from including jewellery, clothing and music stalls. You can even buy an Ostrich burger if you fancy it!
Sarah’s Recommendation for Food & Drink in Cambridge
On plenty of occasions, my husband and I have grabbed a bite to eat at the local Wetherspoons called The Regal, which used to be an old cinema!
